Meta AI now runs with Llama 3
Meta Llama 3 replaces Llama 2. It shall be bigger, faster, and packed with more features, the company claims.

Meta Platforms is replacing the Large Language Model (LLM) in its chatbot Meta AI with a new, improved version. Meta Llama 2 is being replaced by Meta Llama 3. An English version of Llama 3 was launched by Meta AI in 14 countries on Thursday. The AI assistant is omnipresent in various Meta applications, especially in their searches, and can also be tried out on the independent website meta.ai.
This is provided you speak English and are located in Australia, Ghana, Jamaica, Canada, Malawi, New Zealand, Nigeria, Pakistan, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Singapore, South Africa, Uganda or the USA. Further countries are to be added. With Meta Llama 3, Meta AI is "now the most intelligent AI assistant that people can use for free", says the data company. Llama 3 is open source and has been fed with more data; it is said to be better and faster, even for tasks it has never encountered before.
Llama 3 exists in at least two versions of different sizes. The largest version was fed with data up to December 2023 and is based on 70 billion parameters, which is 20 billion more than the largest Llama 2 version. The smaller Llama 3 version with eight billion parameters only has data up to March 2023.
Live search, live images
According to its own information, the Meta AI assistant uses a scaled-down version of the large LLM. Unlike other popular chatbots, the new assistant sometimes links to a public search engine in its responses. It also provides references, for example to Wikipedia or Technology Review, which can also be updated on a daily basis. For example, Meta AI referred heise online to an announcement by Google on Thursday, according to which Meta Llama 3 is now also part of the Vertex AI Model Garden in the Google Cloud. There, experienced users can adapt the LLM to their needs.
Real-time image generation is an innovation that is currently reserved for users in the USA with a Facebook account. They can order an image on the meta.ai website and in Whatsapp. The assistant creates it while the user is still typing. After every few letters entered, the image changes accordingly. The graphical output should also be sharper and of higher quality, especially when it comes to text embedded in the image. The AI can also convert uploaded still images into animations, because the web absolutely needs more GIFs.
When asked to translate two sentences from English into German, Meta AI initially provided a German translation, but immediately deleted it and said: "I don't understand German yet, but I'm working on it."
